Old Manali gives you the cafe scene, the Beas below your window, and fiber that mostly holds, at higher prices than Bir, Dharamkot or Kasol. Come in the shoulder months and skip the monsoon entirely.

  • How to reach. Overnight Volvo from Delhi, 12 to 14 hours. Or break the trip at Chandigarh and ride 7 to 10.
  • Where to stay. Old Manali for cafes, Vashisht for quiet, the Mall side for the road. Rents, distances and flood risk.
  • Things to do. Walk to Hadimba and Old Manali, drive to Solang and Sissu, and book Rohtang at most two days ahead.
  • Treks. Walks from 40 minutes, Lama Dugh in a day, Bhrigu Lake and Hampta Pass in 3 to 5 days, with rules and prices.
