The cost of living in Manali is about ₹18,300 a month if you rent small and cook, and ₹128,000 if you want a serviced chalet and eat out. Most people who want their own room, a desk and a scooter land between ₹35,800 and ₹69,800. Rent decides most of that spread. Prices were checked on 8 October 2026.
Everything is in rupees for one person. Homes and rooms are both let here, by the week or the month, and the budgets assume a furnished room or flat with wifi unless a line says otherwise.
How much a month in Manali costs: ₹36,000 to ₹70,000
Budget ₹36,000 to ₹70,000 for a normal working month. The table above lists each line. The totals add lows to lows and highs to highs, so few people end up at either extreme.
A solo worker, cafes included, can expect ₹37,500 to ₹63,000. A couple living in their own four-bedroom homestay near Manali spend ₹50,000 a month, and that is not the norm.
Manali budget for a 1 month stay: frugal, comfortable, generous
The frugal month is a quiet one. You rent a coliving bed or a small local flat, you cook most of your meals, and you walk or take the local bus. The saving is in the kitchen: street food for every meal would cost ₹9,000 to ₹15,000 a month, which wipes it out. Expect about ₹18,300 to ₹29,800 all in, with a Jio plan at ₹299 to ₹319.
The comfortable month is the one most remote workers pick. Your room is your office, with wifi and a desk, and you hire a scooter to get to cafes and out of the room by evening. Some meals you cook and some you eat out. A cafe or coworking habit adds ₹3,000 to ₹5,000. The total is about ₹35,800 to ₹69,800, and the gap between the two ends is the room and the scooter.
The generous month buys space. You take a serviced one-bedroom flat or a chalet, eat in cafes most days, and use a scooter and taxis. That comes to about ₹71,500 to ₹128,000. We’d only pick it if the room is the point, because the extra spend is almost all rent and cafes.
One week in Manali: trip cost from ₹14,250 to ₹58,800
A week costs far more per day than a month, because you pay nightly rates. Weekly figures cover stay, food, local transport and a SIM, and leave out the journey. Ask the host for a weekly price before you book by the night.
- Budget, about ₹14,250: ₹1,200 a night (₹8,400), food at ₹650 a day (₹4,550), ₹1,000 for local transport and a ₹299 Jio plan.
- Comfortable, about ₹32,900: ₹3,000 a night (₹21,000), food at ₹1,100 a day (₹7,700), a scooter at about ₹3,900 for the week and the same SIM.
- Generous, about ₹58,800: ₹6,000 a night (₹42,000), food at ₹1,500 a day (₹10,500), ₹6,000 of taxis and the SIM.
Peak weeks cost more. Over Christmas and New Year one property priced a room from ₹14,500, and another priced a couple’s three nights at ₹15,999, with a heater fee of ₹500 a day on top. For a shorter trip, four days and three nights runs ₹7,000 to ₹11,000 for a solo backpacker and ₹13,000 to ₹22,000 for a comfortable trip. The best time to visit Manali shows which weeks to avoid.
Manali room rent: monthly prices by type and area
The Kullu valley in spring.
Rent is the line to bargain over, and Old Manali is the dearest of the three areas priced here. In August 2026 a month ran at:
- Old Manali, private room with ensuite and desk: ₹22,000 to ₹38,000
- Vashisht: ₹16,000 to ₹26,000
- Naggar, 20 to 22 km away: ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 for a furnished timber chalet with a kitchenette, ₹14,000 to ₹22,000 for a one-bedroom flat, ₹20,000 to ₹26,000 for a two-bedroom Kath-Kuni house
- Anywhere in town: a private room with wifi and a desk ₹18,000 to ₹35,000, a serviced one-bedroom flat or luxury chalet ₹35,000 to ₹55,000, a coliving bed ₹12,000 to ₹16,000
For a whole flat or house, asking prices in 2026 included Old Manali one-bedroom flats at ₹11,000 and ₹25,000, a furnished one-bedroom in Prini at ₹15,000 and a Prini two-bedroom at ₹20,000, an Aleo two-bedroom at ₹13,000 and a one-bedroom at ₹18,000, and homestay rooms at ₹15,000. Check what the price includes before you compare two rooms, and again if a room looks cheap: unfurnished local flats rent for far less than furnished listings. Where to stay in Manali covers the neighbourhoods behind these numbers.
By the night, a homestay runs ₹1,500 to ₹3,500, a basic guesthouse ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 and a hostel dorm ₹500 to ₹1,000. By the month, a private cottage or homestay is ₹18,000 to ₹32,000, and coliving rooms are discounted 35 to 50 percent from the daily rate for longer stays. For a weekly price, ask the host, since the nightly rate is the one listed.
Agree the deposit, the refund date and what can be deducted in writing before you pay.
Peak weeks fall around New Year and in May and June, when main-town hotels can double or triple their nightly rates. Monthly rents are negotiated, so ask for a price for your dates. The town is emptiest from July to September, when peak-monsoon occupancy was below 10 percent until recently, and that is the time to bargain.
Food costs in Manali: eating out and cooking at home
Chai costs ₹10 to ₹20 at street stalls.
Food is the line you control most: ₹5,500 to ₹10,000 a month if you cook, ₹20,000 to ₹45,000 if you live in cafes. Per person a day, expect ₹500 to ₹800 if you economise, ₹800 to ₹1,500 mixed, and ₹1,500 or more cafe-heavy. A coffee or tea with a snack is ₹150 to ₹250 and a full meal ₹300 to ₹500.
These per-person price bands were current on 8 October 2026, with the number of customer reports in brackets:
- Southern Souls, pure vegetarian South Indian: ₹200 to ₹400
- Dylan’s: ₹200 to ₹400 (59)
- Il Forno: ₹400 to ₹600 (46)
- Come a Napoli: ₹400 to ₹1,000 (107)
- Chopsticks: ₹200 to ₹1,000 (146)
- Sunshine Cafe: ₹200 to ₹1,200 (217)
- Fat Plate: ₹400 to ₹1,400 (75)
- Corner House: ₹400 to ₹1,600 (77)
A band that wide mostly shows the cheapest and dearest order on the menu.
Street food is where the budget stretches. A samosa is ₹15 to ₹30, a babru ₹20 to ₹40, an aloo tikki ₹40 to ₹60, basic momos ₹60 to ₹80 and chai ₹10 to ₹20. A siddu, the steamed stuffed wheat bread, is ₹90 to ₹100 at one sit-down place and ₹100 to ₹200 at others, and takeaway siddu places such as Mehak General Store were priced at ₹1 to ₹200. A plate of momos on Mall Road is about ₹100 and a thukpa ₹100 to ₹200. Dham, the festive thali, is ₹300 to ₹400, but it is cooked for weddings and festivals, so don’t count on it on an ordinary day. A Jain thali ordered through a delivery app was ₹341 in September 2026; delivery cover varies by area, so ask your host whether it reaches the door.
If you cook, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder cost ₹970.50 in Kullu on 8 October 2026, down from ₹984.50 in early July. Manali Mart, a supermarket, was open until 9 pm that day. Ask the host about drinking water.
Internet and SIM costs in Manali: fibre plans, speeds, outages
Internet is cheap. What varies is whether a plan reaches your building, and mobile data is a fine fallback when it doesn’t.
- Airtel Xstream Fiber: ₹499 to ₹699 for 40 Mbps, ₹799 to ₹1,199 for 100 Mbps, ₹1,599 for 300 Mbps, ₹3,999 for 1 Gbps a month, plus GST, free router
- Jio fibre in May 2026: ₹599 for 30 Mbps, ₹899 for 100 Mbps, ₹1,199 for 300 Mbps, plus 18 percent GST, with a 1 TB cap
- BSNL’s lowest Manali plan: ₹449
- Jio mobile, 1.5 GB a day: ₹299 for 28 days, ₹319 for a calendar month, ₹579 for 56 days, ₹799 for 84 days, then 64 Kbps
Airtel, Jio and BSNL fibre are all sold in Old Manali and Naggar, with speeds quoted at 100 to 200 Mbps in Old Manali, 60 to 150 in Vashisht and 100 in Naggar. Some buildings can be as low as 5 to 10 Mbps, with cafe wifi better. That is a wide gap, so ask any host for a screenshot of a speed test taken in the room, and check which provider it is.
On mobile, Jio is usable and strong inside town, Airtel is mostly 4G indoors and BSNL works as a backup. Signal is strongest on Mall Road and varies by building in Old Manali. Airtel scrapped its ₹299 entry plan in August 2026.
Outages happen. On 7 August 2025 a power fluctuation took down Jio mobile and fibre across Kullu from early morning past 6 pm, while BSNL kept working. The August 2025 floods cut mobile and internet in Manali. A second SIM on another network costs about ₹299 and is cheap cover. Seekers Co-Work and Stay in Old Manali was open until 6 pm on 8 October 2026 if you want a desk away from your room.
Local transport costs in Manali: taxis, autos and scooters
Most trips out of town mean a taxi on roads like this.
A scooter is the best value in town, and taxis are for days out. We’d say that because a day of scooter hire is ₹500 to ₹800, while the cheapest sightseeing taxi starts at ₹1,299 a vehicle.
Scooters (Activa, Access, NTorq) are ₹500 to ₹800 a day, with a deposit of ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 and fuel extra. A Classic 350 is ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 and a Himalayan ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. Shops take 10 to 15 percent off for a week or more. You need a licence, and foreigners an international driving permit. Two-wheelers are banned at Rohtang. For a month, quotes run from ₹4,500 to ₹7,000 up to about ₹12,750 (the day rate less 15 percent), so settle the monthly price before you pay.
Taxis are priced per vehicle, with no union rates or fixed tariffs. Operators differ by as much as ₹4,000, so ask two.
- Sightseeing: ₹1,299 to ₹4,499
- Solang: ₹1,999 to ₹4,499
- Atal Tunnel and Sissu: ₹2,999 to ₹5,999
- Rohtang: ₹3,999 to ₹12,500
From the bus stand, an AC sedan is quoted at ₹130 to Old Manali and ₹150 to Vashisht at the low end and ₹499 to ₹699 at the high end, so expect the higher figure with luggage. Local buses cost ₹20 to ₹100 and shared taxis start around ₹600 to Solang and ₹800 to Sissu. Autos appear only occasionally, and Ola and Uber are unreliable. Drivers had been charging up to 10 times the legal fare when the auto unions of Manali, Kullu and Bhuntar agreed fixed fares on 8 September 2026, so ask to see the rate list.
If you arrive in your own vehicle, the green tax (the Composite Environmental Fund) applies to every vehicle not registered in Himachal: ₹100 for a bike, ₹200 for a light motor vehicle, ₹300 for a passenger vehicle and ₹500 for a goods vehicle. It is valid for 7 days and can be applied for up to 9 days ahead. A printout is mandatory, and wrong details mean no entry. On a peak day 2,500 to 3,500 of the 4,000 to 5,000 vehicles arriving come from other states. Rohtang is separate: the 2026 permit was ₹500 plus a ₹50 congestion charge, booked at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in.
Hidden costs of living in Manali: heaters, power backup, taxis
Winter is the surprise cost. Nights average around freezing from December to February and have touched minus 11.6 in January. Room heaters are often charged separately, and one hotel charged ₹500 a day. Electricity on the state tariff from 1 April 2026 is ₹4.71 a unit up to 60 units, ₹5.44 up to 125 and ₹5.89 above, so 200 units comes to about ₹1,121 before fixed charges and duty. Bills ran ₹300 to ₹1,000.
Check what backup power covers. A room advertised with power backup may not run the geyser or a heater, and outages are frequent in town. Ask what stays on when the grid goes.
Old Manali is about 3 km uphill from the bus stand, and the walk is hard with bags. Budget ₹499 to ₹699 for the ride up with luggage, as covered in how to reach Manali.
A weekend taxi to Solang or the tunnel is ₹1,999 to ₹5,999 a vehicle, so split it between as many people as you can.
UPI is widely used in the main town, but weak data can fail a payment, and ATMs run dry in peak season. Carry cash.
Manali vs Bir, Dharamkot and Kasol: monthly cost compared
Manali is the dearer of the four. In August 2026, Bir rents at ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 and totals ₹16,000 to ₹30,000 a month, Dharamkot rents at ₹15,000 to ₹24,000, and Kasol totals ₹14,000 to ₹24,000, with accommodation at ₹6,000 to ₹14,000. Manali comes out roughly ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a month higher on rent and ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 higher on totals. It is not the dearest nearby, since Naggar chalets reach ₹45,000.
Paying for a Manali stay from abroad: cash, ATMs and the C-Form
Plan in rupees and carry some cash. UPI is common in the main town but depends on signal, and ATMs are few: an HDFC branch is in town, and State Bank machines have stood at Mall Road, Vashisht, Palchan and Aleo. A host who lets a room to a foreign guest for money must file a C-Form within 24 hours of check-in, so ask whether yours does. To hire a scooter you will need an international driving permit.
Which Manali budget fits you, and what to ask the host
Pick frugal if you like to cook, can live in one room and don’t need a desk. Pick comfortable if you are working remotely for a month or longer and want a room that works as an office, a scooter and a cafe. Pick generous for a long stay in Manali where space, a kitchen and a view matter more than the bill. If you are unsure, plan from the middle of the comfortable column, because rent ranges are wide and the winter costs sit outside it.
Before you pay, ask the host:
- Is electricity included, or metered at what rate per unit?
- Is heating included, or is it a daily charge?
- What does the backup run: wifi, geyser, heater?
- Which provider is the wifi, and can you see a speed test taken in the room?
- Is laundry included?
- What is the deposit, and when is it refunded?
- Is there a weekly rate, and what changes in peak weeks?
Our homes and rooms are let by the week or the month. Whoever you book with, get these answers in writing.
