Working from Uttarakhand
The short version of everything we've learned about living and working here.
It suits people who want the mountains without the scramble. The drive from Delhi is shorter than to most of Himachal, the power grid behaves better, and towns like Bhimtal and Almora let you settle into a routine within a day or two. The trade is a smaller crowd of remote workers, so evenings are quieter.
Rishikesh is the all-rounder, with fiber, yoga schools and the Ganga at the end of the street. Landour, just above Mussoorie, has the deodars, the bakeries and the quiet. The lake towns of Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal give you water outside the window, and Almora and Kasar Devi have hosted writers for a century. Mukteshwar and Peora have orchards and Nanda Devi views, but the connection depends on the house.
Same rules as everywhere on Work From Hills. Someone from our team stays two days, works a full day from the desk, tests the wifi and the power backup, and writes up what we found. Homes and private rooms rent by the week or the month.
Rishikesh, Dehradun and Mussoorie have the strongest connectivity, with fiber widely available. Bhimtal, Nainital and Almora are close behind. Landour rides on Mussoorie's infrastructure while feeling like a different century.
Roads are generally better, power is steadier, and towns are closer to Delhi, which matters if you fly often. The trade is a smaller remote work crowd. If you want cafes full of laptops, pick Himachal; if you want quiet and dependability, Uttarakhand wins.
Expect twelve to twenty five thousand rupees a month for a good one bedroom home depending on the town, with Landour and Mussoorie at the top of the range and Almora or Bhimtal notably cheaper.
Spring and autumn are ideal everywhere. Summers are pleasant in the higher towns like Mussoorie and Almora. Winters are workable in the lake towns, and the mountain views are at their sharpest then.
