Uttarakhand · Almora
Almora is a pine-covered ridge town, and the quiet sits a few kilometres out on the Kasar Devi hill, where on a clear day the snow peaks line up across the valley. Fibre reaches the town, the hill is patchier, and winter mornings are properly cold, so you will want to ask your host more questions here than you would in most towns.

The hill road out of Almora toward Bageshwar, 6 to 8 km from the Almora bus stand for most of the homes we list, and about 8 km to the temple. It is the quiet end of the district, with pines and ridge views. A local taxi to town costs about ₹300 to ₹500 one way, so plan to buy groceries in bulk in Almora and keep a second SIM for the days the signal slips.
The ridge-top town has the bazaar, Mall Road with its banks and cash machines, the hospitals and the bus stand. The rooms we list in town are 400 m to 2.5 km from the bus stand, and both are under a kilometre from a hospital. Bright End Corner, about 2 km out on the Bageshwar road, is the sunset point for Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli. Choose town if you want errands on foot and a short road in.
The forested sanctuary about 30 km north of Almora, at 900 to 2,500 m, where Zero Point looks across to Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trisul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchachuli. It was the Chand kings' summer capital and the British used it too. It is the furthest of the three from town, so it suits a short stay or a car.

Jio and Airtel both sell fibre in Almora town, from about ₹399 and ₹499 a month plus GST, and Jio charges ₹1,000 to install. Whether a house on the Kasar Devi hill is on fibre or on a mobile router is the question to ask, because signal up there can fade indoors. BSNL also has decent coverage across the region, and a Jio or Airtel hotspot on a second SIM is a sensible backup. Every listing shows the wifi speed we measured and the date.
Almora sits on a ridge at about 1,600 m, and the Kasar Devi hill above it is higher, at about 2,100 m, among pine and deodar. On a clear day you can see peaks from Bandarpunch on the Himachal border to Api Himal in Nepal, with the Almora ridge and the Hawalbagh valley in the foreground. The temple on top was rebuilt in 1948. The hill has drawn writers and seekers since Swami Vivekananda meditated here in the 1890s and the Beat poets came in 1961, and the Kasar Devi Fair is held each year on Kartika Purnima, in November or December.
Leopards live in the forest around Almora: one that had been roaming the town's Police Line area for over a month was caged on 3 March 2026. Carry a torch for any walk after dark, and ask your host what the last stretch to the door is like at night before you book. The government medical college hospital and a base hospital are both in Almora, and from the Kasar Devi homes we list the nearest is 3.5 to 7.5 km away, so keep basic medicines in the room. Cash machines are in town, not on the hill.
Yes, if you pick your hill and your month with care. Almora is a ridge town of about 1,600 m with Jio and Airtel fibre, a bazaar, banks and a hospital, and the Kasar Devi hill above it is where a homestay in Almora feels like a village. A month of rooms with us runs ₹17,000 to ₹40,000, and March to May and mid-October to November are the easiest stretches to start an Almora stay.
For most working stays, on the hill, with a weekly trip down for the shopping. A Kasar Devi homestay gives you pine forest, ridge views and quiet evenings, and Almora’s Mall Road, Lala Bazar and cash machines are a short taxi away. Stay in town if you want the hospital, the bus stand and the market on foot, or if you do not want to depend on a taxi for every errand. The Kasar Devi stay costs you a colder winter and a patchier signal.
Three things. How the last stretch to the door looks at night, and how far it is from the road. Whether the house is on fibre or on a mobile router, and which SIM holds up in your room. And what heats the room and what the backup runs, since the state’s power cuts began on 19 September 2026 and winter on the hill is cold. The listing shows the measured wifi speed and the date.
Start close. Bright End Corner is about 2 km out of town on the Bageshwar road and faces Trishul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli at sunset. The Chitai Golu Devta temple, about 10 km away, is hung with bells that devotees tie on to make a wish. The Katarmal Sun Temple, about 17 km out, dates to the 9th century. Jageshwar, a cluster of more than 100 temples in a deodar forest, is about 36 km away, and Binsar is about 30 km north. Allow a half day for the temples and a full day for Binsar.
Yes. The minimum is a week, and a week on our listings is ₹5,000 to ₹12,000. A week up on the Kasar Devi hill is a good way to find out how you feel about the walk to the road, the winter cold and the mobile signal before you commit to a month.
About 8 km by road to the temple, and 6 to 8 km from the Almora bus stand to most of the homes we list. A local taxi costs about ₹300 to ₹500 one way. Ask your host about the last stretch, because some houses are reached on foot from the road.
Jio and Airtel work in and around Almora, and BSNL has decent coverage across the region. Signal on the hill can be patchy and sometimes fades indoors, so ask your host which network holds up in the room you are booking, and carry a second SIM as a hotspot.
Almora town averages 6 to 7°C at night from December to February and 14 to 16°C by day, and the hill is colder. Light snow is possible in December and January, and Almora itself saw its first snow of the 2024 winter around 9 December. Ask whether your room has a heater or a fireplace.
Take the overnight Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi, which leaves at about 10:30 pm and reaches Kathgodam at about 5 am, then a shared cab from Kathgodam or Haldwani to Almora for about ₹250 a seat. The last leg to Kasar Devi is a local taxi at ₹300 to ₹500. Check train times when you book, as they change.
A hilltop temple to the goddess Kasar Devi, rebuilt in 1948, and a long run of writers and seekers. Swami Vivekananda meditated in the area in the 1890s, the Beat poets Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky and Gary Snyder visited in 1961, and Crank's Ridge became a stop on the hippie trail in the 1960s and 1970s.
Pick a home where the last stretch to the door is a road or a lit path, not a forest trail, and arrive in daylight. Leopards are active in the district, so a torch is the precaution that counts after dark. Ask your host how far the nearest neighbour is, and who is in the house at night.
Binsar is about 30 km north of Almora, so it is a day trip by taxi or car rather than a walk. Zero Point is the viewpoint for Kedarnath, Trisul and Nanda Devi, and the sanctuary charges an entry fee at the gate. Go on a clear morning, and keep the afternoon for the drive back.
