Every menu in Rishikesh is vegetarian, because selling meat, fish and eggs is banned inside the municipal limits. The best cafes in Rishikesh cluster at the Laxman Jhula bridgehead and along the Tapovan lanes, with a few up the hill in Upper Tapovan, while the plain local food is in Swarg Ashram and near Triveni Ghat. On 9 October 2026 most cafes on the listings asked ₹400 to ₹700 for two and opened between 7 and 11:30 am. Hours shift with the season, so phone first.
What to eat in Rishikesh: thali, chaat and Garhwali dishes
Chole bhature. Photo: Gannu03, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
Start with a thali. A plain one costs ₹80 to ₹150 and a restaurant thali ₹200 to ₹400. Breakfast is aloo puri at ₹50 to ₹150 or chole bhature at ₹60 to ₹150. Chaat and pakoras run ₹30 to ₹100, a samosa ₹20 to ₹50 and momos ₹50 to ₹150, with masala chai at ₹10 to ₹30 from a street stall. Stalls near both bridges sell chaat and puri, and the bazaar near Triveni Ghat is the place for local eating. A South Indian meal of dosa or idli costs ₹100 to ₹150 at the plainer places.
The town’s own cooking is Garhwali, built on daal, gahat, phaanu, millet, barley and buckwheat. Ask for aloo ke gutke, kafuli, chainsoo or mandua (ragi) roti. They are not on every menu, so look for places that advertise Garhwali or Pahari food.
Chotiwala in Rishikesh, and other plain local places to eat
Chotiwala in Swarg Ashram is the best-known name, and it has been there since 1958. One listing is rated 3.6, serves North Indian food, costs about ₹500 for two and opens at 7:30 am. A second, Chotiwala Restaurant, is unrated, about ₹550 for two, and opens at 8:15 am. Look-alike branches are common, so check which one you are in. Reviewers mention QR-menu prices that surprised them, so check prices before you order. We’d treat it as a stop for the name, not a planned meal.
The cheapest breakfast is the Geeta Bhawan canteen in Swarg Ashram: puri and sabzi for ₹25 to ₹50, plus sweets. It takes cash only, keeps limited hours and shows a 10 am opening. Pappu Lassi beside Triveni Ghat sells thick kulhad lassi for under ₹50, is rated 4.6 and opens at 8 am.
Is non veg available in Rishikesh? Meat, eggs and alcohol
Not in the town: selling meat, fish and eggs is banned inside the municipal limits of Rishikesh and Muni ki Reti, under a 1956 notification that the Supreme Court upheld in 2004. Liquor is banned across the Rishikesh municipal corporation area. The strip from Tapovan to Swarg Ashram, and the town, are vegetarian and dry in practice, so don’t count on an egg on a menu or a beer with dinner.
Outside the municipal limits the ban does not apply, but the limits do not follow the edge of what visitors call Rishikesh. Ask your host before you plan a meal around it. Ashrams add their own rules inside their gates.
Tapovan cafes: what each is known for and what it costs
Tapovan has the most cafes, mostly ₹400 to ₹1,300 for two. The cheapest rated one is New Lucky Cafe, rated 4.3 at about ₹200. Hotel restaurants such as Akasa at The Westin, rated 4.3, cost about ₹3,000.
Bistro Nirvana. Rated 4.6, about ₹700 for two, opens at 8:30 am. The menu runs from Italian and Israeli to Mexican and North Indian.
House of Amritsar. North Indian street food, rated 4.6, about ₹1,000 for two. It was still serving in the late evening on 9 October.
Devraj Coffee Corner German Bakery. Order the filter coffee and granola, and ask for the quiet corner. Rated 4.3, about ₹600, opens at 8 am.
Divine Cafe and Bakery. The early one, opening at 7 am. Rated 4.4, about ₹500 for two.
Social Soul Cafe. A third-floor rooftop with a real espresso machine and live music at weekends. About ₹1,300 for two, opens at 10:15 am.
Other Tapovan listings with ratings of 4.3 or more include Soul Kitchen (about ₹350 for two, opens 8:30 am), Vj’s by the Ganges for pizza (about ₹500, opens 11:30 am) and Om Shanti Shanti Cafe (rated 4.4, about ₹800, opens 11 am).
Beatles Cafe in Rishikesh: the one on Badrinath Road
The Beatles-themed cafe is in the Green Hills part of Tapovan on Badrinath Road. It has a deck full of Beatles memorabilia, a valley and river view, and a vegan burger that is its best-known order. A vegan cappuccino is about ₹180. It is listed twice, as Beatles Cafe (rated 4.5, about ₹1,200 for two, opens 11:30 am) and as The 60’s Cafe (rated 4.2, about ₹700, opens 8 am). Reviewers say the food varies and it can be loud, and several places have similar names, so aim for the Green Hills one. The Beatles Ashram is a different place and a sight, covered in the things to do guide.
Upper Tapovan cafes: wood-fired pizza and vegan cake up the hill
A Tavola con Te. An Italian couple’s wood-fired place on an unsigned lane. Expect waits of 30 to 45 minutes, so reserve. Rated 4.6, about ₹800 for two, opens at noon.
French Bakery Coffee and Juice Shop. Known for vegan cake that sells out, and for soy cappuccino. About ₹200 for two, opens at 7:30 am.
Laxman Jhula cafes: the riverfront decks and what they cost
The famous riverfront names are here, and they carry the lowest ratings of the well-known cafes. Come for the position, and order simply.
Little Buddha Cafe. A multi-level deck over the Ganga, rated 3.4, about ₹700 for two, opens at 8 am. Reviewers mention slow service and raised prices at rush hour, and the stairs are steep. Go off-peak for big portions.
Ganga Beach Cafe. The seats closest to the water, rated 3.5, about ₹500, opens at 7:30 am. Reviewers call the food tasteless, so order chai and pay for the spot.
Om Freedom Cafe. Cushion floors below the bridge and queue-worthy pancakes, with waits of 25 to 30 minutes in season. Rated 3.3, about ₹700, opens at 8 am.
Ganga View Cafe. A river view from nearly every table. Rated 4.4, about ₹650, opens at 8:30 am.
The Pyramid Cafe. Pyramid-shaped seating. Rated 4.2, about ₹400, opens at 8:30 am.
The Arches Cafe and Bakery. Proper Italian-style espresso in a design-led room, though reviewers say the food is style over flavour. Rated 4.3, about ₹1,600, opens at 8 am. It also does vegan and gluten-free bowls.
Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram: ashram canteens and simple cafes
Besides Chotiwala and the Geeta Bhawan canteen above, Ram Jhula Restaurant serves coffee, North Indian and Chinese food, rated 4.3, about ₹550 for two, opening at 9 am. Cafe Moktan and Bakery’s is a bakery at about ₹200, opening at 8 am. With Ram Jhula shut for repairs, the way across from the west bank is Janki Setu or a boat. The where to stay guide has the crossings.
Best restaurants in Rishikesh town: sunset rooftops and thali dinners
The Sitting Elephant. A rooftop on Haridwar Road with the widest Ganga view in town, live music and mains around ₹350 to ₹650. Rated 4.6, about ₹1,800 for two, opens at 10 am. Reserve, arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset, and ask for a printed bill, since one review disputed an unexpected high-tea charge.
Jal and Jalebi. A Garhwali thali on Virbhadra Road, rated 4.2, about ₹2,000 for two, opens at 7 am. A December 2025 review called the buffet kitchen painfully slow at peak.
VARR Artisanal Temple Thali Experience. Rated 4.5, about ₹2,000 for two, opens at 8 am.
Work friendly cafes in Rishikesh: what to expect from the wifi
Dedicated coworking is rare, and most people work from cafes. Social Soul Cafe is the one described as laptop-friendly with strong wifi, though you climb three floors to reach it, and Little Buddha has reliable wifi if you go off-peak. Cafes promise wifi they don’t always deliver, so test the speed before you settle in. Short power cuts knock wifi offline, and a mobile hotspot from Airtel or Jio is often more reliable than a cafe’s connection.
Some riverside places do not allow laptops, so ask before you open one. We’d order something every hour or two and work in the morning, since kitchens wind down at 10 or 11 pm and some cafes have live music at weekends. Desk spaces sell day passes at roughly ₹200 to ₹700, so ask for the current price.
Eating for a month in Rishikesh: groceries, delivery, vegan food
Tapovan has organic grocery stores that stock cold-pressed oils, almond milk and Himalayan grains. Ask your host which vegetable market the neighbours use and on which days. Delivery apps cover Rishikesh town, with chains such as Domino’s (rated 4.4) and local bakeries listed. Whether they reach a lane in Tapovan or Upper Tapovan depends on the building, so ask before you count on it.
Never drink tap water. Use sealed bottles or RO or UV refills, and check that the flat has a gas stove or an induction hob. Carry cash, because several places take only cash and ATMs can run dry at weekends. For a month, food runs about ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 if you eat at thali places and cook, and ₹14,000 to ₹20,000 with a cafe meal most days. The cost of living guide has the whole budget.
Vegan eating mostly means avoiding dairy: ghee, paneer, curd, butter, milk and honey. At a plain place say, “Vegan. No milk, no ghee, no butter, no paneer, no curd. Cooked in oil, please.” The Arches and French Bakery are the named options for vegan and gluten-free food. If you have coeliac disease, say so and ask how a dish is made. For coffee beans, order online and have them delivered in a few days, and buy filter-coffee powder from a local grocer.
Downsides of Rishikesh cafes: slow service, repeat menus, early closing
At the river-view places the view outruns the kitchen. Menus overlap heavily, with the same pizza, pasta, momos, hummus, shakshuka and smoothie bowls, so a second cafe can feel like the first. Service slows at rush hour, with waits of 25 to 45 minutes at the popular names.
Many famous cafes do not open until 9 or 10 am, and kitchens close by 10 or 11 pm. Several names exist as more than one venue, including Chotiwala, the Beatles and 60’s cafes, and German bakeries, so confirm the exact address. Winter is the high season, and many places cut hours or close in the monsoon and the peak of summer. The best time to visit guide has the months. Monkeys steal food on the bridges, so keep it in a bag.
