Cost of living in Rishikesh: a week and a month
About ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 a month for a comfortable life. Frugal starts near ₹19,300.
Last updated 9 Oct 2026 · 12 min read

One person in Rishikesh spends about ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 a month on a comfortable budget, ₹19,300 to ₹33,200 on a frugal one and ₹93,000 to ₹158,000 on a generous one. Comfortable buys a furnished room or 1BHK in Tapovan or Laxman Jhula, wifi, a mix of cafe and thali meals, a few yoga classes and autos instead of a scooter. A week costs about ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 in a dorm and ₹28,000 to ₹50,000 in a comfortable flat, before the journey. Rent moves most: furnished Tapovan studios and 1BHKs were asking ₹16,000 to ₹40,000 in October 2026.

The cost of living in Rishikesh is about ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 a month for one person who wants a furnished room or 1BHK with wifi, eats out some days and gets about by auto. A frugal month starts near ₹19,300, and a generous one reaches ₹158,000. Rent decides most of that spread. Prices were seen from August to October 2026.
Everything is in rupees for one person.
Cost of living in Rishikesh per month: what ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 buys
Budget ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 for a normal working month. The table lists each line. The totals add lows to lows and highs to highs, so few people end up at either extreme. A scooter on top of the comfortable month brings it to about ₹50,000 to ₹82,000.
Rishikesh budget for a month: frugal, comfortable, generous
The frugal month is a quiet one. You rent a furnished room or small flat in the main town, Muni Ki Reti or the Swarg Ashram side, eat thali or cook, ride shared autos and take a yoga class now and then. It comes to about ₹19,300 to ₹33,200.
The comfortable month is the one most remote workers pick. The room is your office, in Tapovan or on the Laxman Jhula side, with wifi and a desk. You have a cafe meal once a day and a thali for the other, a 10-class yoga pass once or twice a month, and autos with the odd taxi. That is ₹46,300 to ₹70,000.
The generous month buys space. You take a river-view or serviced 1BHK, a dedicated desk in a co-working space, cafes most days, a scooter and taxis, and wellness sessions. It runs ₹93,000 to ₹158,000. We’d only pick it if the room is the point, because most of the extra goes on rent and cafes.
Rishikesh trip cost for one week: from ₹4,000 to ₹50,000 and more
A week costs far more per day than a month because you pay nightly rates. These figures cover stay, food, local transport and a SIM, and leave out the journey. Ask the host for a weekly price before you book by the night.
- Dorm bed, about ₹4,000 to ₹10,000: a bed at ₹199 to ₹644 a night, food at ₹300 to ₹500 a day, a ₹319 Jio plan and up to three drop-in classes.
- Private room, about ₹13,500 to ₹19,000: seven nights in a private room at ₹9,594 to ₹12,993, food at ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 for the week and the same SIM.
- Comfortable, about ₹28,000 to ₹50,000: a whole flat for the week (a median of about ₹19,000, in a range of ₹9,608 to ₹38,900), food at ₹4,500 to ₹7,000, a scooter at about ₹3,300 for the week and two classes.
- Generous, about ₹50,000 to ₹100,000: a hotel or resort at ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 a night, taxis at ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, and rafting from ₹600.
Peak weeks cost more. List prices for New Year week ran about 19 percent above mid-November for rooms and 34 percent for the median whole place. The Kanwar weeks, Diwali and 6 to 15 March 2027 will also cost more; the best time to visit Rishikesh shows which weeks to avoid.
Room rent in Rishikesh: monthly prices by area and type
Rent is the line to bargain over, and the river side of town is the dearer half. Asking rents seen on 8 October 2026:
- Tapovan, furnished studio or 1BHK: ₹16,000 to ₹40,000, median ₹31,000, from eight listings. A one-bedroom house was ₹15,000 and ₹28,000, and a 2BHK builder floor ₹25,000.
- Laxman Jhula side: a furnished 1BHK at ₹23,000 and ₹25,000, and a furnished two-bedroom house at ₹25,000.
- Muni Ki Reti: a 300 sq ft 1BHK at ₹15,000.
- Main town (Nirmal Bag, Virbhadra Marg, Ganga Nagar, Gumaniwala): a 1BHK at ₹15,000 to ₹17,000 and a 2BHK at ₹17,000 to ₹29,000. Unfurnished two-bedroom flats on Haridwar Road and in Malviya Nagar and Dhalwala asked ₹7,500 to ₹10,000.
- Other areas, studios and rooms quoted in August 2026: Swarg Ashram and Jonk ₹10,000 to ₹20,000, Upper Tapovan and High Bank ₹14,000 to ₹25,000, Muni Ki Reti and Dayananda Ghat ₹12,000 to ₹22,000.
Every listing that stated a deposit asked for one month’s rent, except the ₹25,000 Laxman Jhula 1BHK, which asked for ₹50,000. Agree the deposit, the refund date and what can be deducted in writing before you pay.
1BHK rent in Tapovan, Rishikesh: asking rents against 30-night prices
The ₹16,000 to ₹40,000 range is what owners ask. A booking platform priced 30 nights from 10 November 2026 higher: private rooms ₹20,216 to ₹44,230, median about ₹31,230, and whole flats from ₹17,169 to ₹87,870, with a median of about ₹58,000 and Tapovan 1BHKs and studios mostly ₹36,000 to ₹73,000. Those are furnished short-lets, so ask what the price includes before you compare two homes. The same homes priced for March and July 2027 starts were flat to lower, so don’t wait for a season to cut the rent.
Long stay in Rishikesh: hostels, ashrams and nightly rates
For a first week before you settle, hostel dorm beds run ₹199 to ₹644 a night and private hostel rooms ₹250 to ₹1,360. Ashrams charge differently. Yoga Niketan Ashram publishes per-night rates that include three sattvic meals, tea and classes: ₹1,700 to ₹1,900 for a non-AC single, ₹3,260 for a non-AC double, ₹2,500 for an AC single and ₹4,000 for an AC double. Ashram long stays with meals, yoga and meditation are quoted at ₹18,000 to ₹35,000 a month. Parmarth Niketan and Sivananda Ashram ask guests to follow ashram rules, including silence hours at Parmarth from 10 pm to 6 am and a vegetarian diet.
Food costs in Rishikesh: a vegetarian town, from thali to cafe

Meat, fish and eggs are banned inside the municipal limits of Rishikesh and Muni Ki Reti, and liquor is banned across the municipal corporation area. Food is vegetarian, and there is no beer line in the budget. The price gap is between thali places and cafes that cater to visitors.
Food is ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 a month if you eat thali or cook, ₹14,000 to ₹20,000 mixed and ₹22,000 to ₹38,000 cafe-heavy. An unlimited thali is ₹80 to ₹150, an aloo paratha with curd ₹50 to ₹80, street chai ₹10 to ₹20 and cafe chai ₹30 to ₹50. A cafe breakfast is ₹150 to ₹300, a cafe lunch or dinner ₹200 to ₹400, a fresh juice ₹50 to ₹100, a cappuccino about ₹140 and a litre of water ₹20.
Cost for two at Tapovan-area outlets on 8 October 2026:
- Tasty Spoon and Apni Rasoi Bhojanalya (Dhalwala): ₹200
- Khana Khazana: ₹450
- Cafe Moksha (Swarg Ashram) and Good Feel: ₹500
- Little Buddha Cafe: ₹700
- Ecko Hotel and House of Amritsar: ₹1,000
- Beatles Cafe: ₹1,200
If you cook, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder cost ₹961 in Dehradun on 8 October 2026, and milk is about ₹58 a litre. Food and cafes in Rishikesh covers where to eat.
Yoga course cost in Rishikesh: drop-ins, retreats and teacher training
Drop-ins are the cheap way in. Om Shanti Om Yoga on Baba Balak Nath Road in Tapovan charges ₹400 a class, or ₹3,000 for 10 classes (₹300 each), with no booking needed. Drop-ins elsewhere run ₹200 to ₹500. A seven-day retreat costs ₹18,000 to ₹35,000.
A 200-hour teacher training costs ₹85,000 to ₹150,000 with room and meals, and a 300-hour course ₹110,000 to ₹170,000. A visa for foreign students costs about ₹6,000, and living costs outside the course run ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 a day. Ayurvedic treatments are ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a session. A monthly mix of yoga, meditation and sound healing runs ₹2,500 to ₹18,000, and a gym is about ₹1,100 a month.
Internet and phone costs in Rishikesh: fibre plans, speeds, outages
Internet is cheap. What varies is whether a provider reaches your building, and mobile data is a workable fallback.
- Airtel Xstream Fibre: ₹499 and ₹699 for 40 Mbps, ₹799 to ₹1,199 for 100 Mbps, ₹1,599 for 300 Mbps and ₹3,999 for 1 Gbps a month, plus GST, with free installation and router
- Jio home broadband, prepaid: ₹399 for 30 Mbps, ₹699 for 100, ₹999 for 150 and ₹1,499 for 300, plus GST, with ₹1,000 installation and deposits of ₹500 for the router and ₹1,000 for the set-top box
- Jio mobile, 1.5 GB a day: ₹319 for a calendar month, ₹579 for 56 days and ₹799 for 84 days
Reported speeds range from about 10 Mbps to 200 Mbps depending on the building and provider. Ask any host which provider serves the room and for a screenshot of a speed test taken there. Formal co-working is rare; desks are quoted at ₹5,000 to ₹8,500 a month, so confirm a space is open before you plan around it.
Getting around Rishikesh: autos, scooters and the bridge closures

Shared autos (vikrams) run fixed routes at ₹10 to ₹20 a person. A private auto from Tapovan to Ram Jhula is ₹100 to ₹200, and a ride between zones is ₹200 to ₹500, agreed before you get in. A shared taxi to Kunjapuri is ₹200 to ₹300, a temple-circuit taxi ₹800 to ₹1,200 return, Haridwar ₹800 to ₹1,000 and the Jolly Grant airport ₹800 to ₹1,200.
Scooters start at ₹500 a day for an Activa 125 and ₹1,000 for a Hunter 350, with a deposit of ₹1,000 and fuel extra. One shop takes 10 percent off from the fourth day and 30 percent off for a month, which is about ₹10,500 for an Activa, while monthly platforms quote ₹3,000 to ₹5,000. We’d budget ₹4,000 to ₹12,000. You need a licence and Aadhaar, and foreigners a passport and an international driving permit. Petrol was ₹99.54 a litre in Rishikesh town and ₹100.82 on the Tapovan side on 8 October 2026.
Two closed bridges change what a ride costs. Laxman Jhula has been closed since July 2019, and Ram Jhula has been shut to everyone since about 25 July 2026, with reopening targeted for December 2026. Janki Setu takes pedestrians and two-wheelers, boats cross the river, and Bajrang Setu next to Laxman Jhula is open to pedestrians. A fee of ₹100 an adult for its glass walkways was announced on 29 July 2026 with no start date. With luggage or a car, the east bank is reached by road via the barrage. Ask your host how to reach the door; the how to reach guide covers the journey in.
Hidden costs of living in Rishikesh: AC bills, backup power, doctors
AC is the summer surprise. Electricity on the state tariff from 1 April 2026 is ₹3.65 a unit up to 100 units, ₹5.25 up to 200, ₹7.15 up to 400 and ₹7.80 above, plus a fixed charge of ₹85 a kW for loads of 1 to 4 kW. A 150-unit month comes to about ₹750 and a 300-unit month with AC about ₹1,865, and 500 units about ₹3,520, with duty. Ask whether power is included, metered or billed at a flat rate.
Check what backup power covers. The state utility declared an emergency on 19 September 2026, so ask what keeps running when the grid goes: router, fan, AC.
Laundry is about ₹50 a shirt and ₹300 to ₹400 for a two-piece suit. A private general physician charges ₹250 to ₹700, and AIIMS Rishikesh’s OPD registration is ₹10, with the counter open 8 to 11:30 am Monday to Saturday. Entry prices differ by passport: the Beatles Ashram charges ₹200 to Indians and ₹1,200 to foreigners. Rafting costs ₹600 to ₹2,500 by stretch, and things to do in Rishikesh covers the other activities.
Rishikesh vs Manali, Bir and Dharamkot: monthly cost compared
Rishikesh costs about the same as Manali at the top and more at the bottom. Manali’s comfortable month runs ₹35,800 to ₹69,800 with a scooter, against ₹46,300 to ₹70,000 here without one. Furnished Tapovan rent runs ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 above a Manali 1BHK, while a main-town Rishikesh 1BHK at ₹15,000 to ₹17,000 is cheaper. Bir rents at ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 with totals of ₹16,000 to ₹30,000, so Rishikesh’s frugal month matches the top half of Bir. Dharamkot rents at ₹15,000 to ₹24,000, and McLeod Ganj totals ₹18,000 to ₹35,000.
Paying for a Rishikesh stay from abroad: rupees and ashram bookings
Plan in rupees and convert at the day’s rate. Book ashrams only through their own sites. Parmarth Niketan takes bookings through an online form and says it never asks for payment by phone or WhatsApp, and Sivananda Ashram warns of a fake site that takes room bookings. The official sites are sivanandaonline.org and dlshq.org. To hire a scooter you need your passport and an international driving permit.
Which Rishikesh budget fits you, and what to ask the host
Pick frugal if you cook or eat thali, can live in one room and don’t need a desk. Pick comfortable if you are working remotely for a month or more and want a room that works as an office. Pick generous when space, a river view and a desk matter more than the bill. If you are unsure, plan from the middle of the comfortable column and add a summer AC bill. Where to stay in Rishikesh covers the areas.
Before you pay, ask the host:
- Is electricity included, or metered at what rate per unit, and does AC cost extra?
- What does the backup run: router, fan, AC?
- Which provider is the wifi, and can you see a speed test taken in the room?
- What is the deposit, and when is it refunded?
- Is there a weekly rate, and what changes in peak weeks?
- How do I reach the door with Ram Jhula shut?
Our homes and rooms are let by the week or the month. Whoever you book with, get these answers in writing.
Frequently asked questions about the cost of living in Rishikesh
Can you live in Rishikesh on ₹20,000 a month?
Only just, and only with a cheap room. The frugal sum starts at about ₹19,300 and assumes a room at ₹12,000 to ₹16,000, thali meals, shared autos at ₹10 to ₹20 a ride and a ₹319 Jio plan.
Is there a deposit on a monthly rental?
Every listing that stated one asked for a month's rent, except a Laxman Jhula 1BHK at ₹25,000 that asked for ₹50,000. Scooter shops take ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. Agree the refund date and the deductions in writing before you pay.
Do monthly rents change by season?
Not consistently. Monthly prices on the same Tapovan homes were flat to lower for stays starting in March and July 2027 than for one starting on 10 November 2026. Nightly and weekly prices do move: New Year week list prices ran about 19 percent above mid-November for rooms and 34 percent for the median whole place.
Does the power go out in Rishikesh?
On 19 September 2026 the state utility declared an emergency and began cuts of 35 minutes to 15 hours, staggered by type of consumer, after a weak monsoon cut hydropower. Ask whether the backup runs the router and the fan or AC.
Is it cheaper to stay in an ashram?
Sometimes. Yoga Niketan Ashram publishes ₹1,700 to ₹1,900 a night for a non-AC single with three meals, tea and classes, and ashram long stays that include meals and classes are quoted at ₹18,000 to ₹35,000 a month. Parmarth Niketan and Sivananda Ashram expect guests to follow ashram rules.
Do you need a scooter in Rishikesh?
Not on the Tapovan and Laxman Jhula side, where shared autos cost ₹10 to ₹20 a ride. A scooter helps if you live above Tapovan or want Neer Garh and Kunjapuri on your own schedule. Budget ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 a month.
